“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:1-5
It’s the beginning of a new year, a new chance for you to discover and live the plan that God has for your life. I hope that you’ve taken some time in these first days of January to really think about where 2013 has brought you and where you want to go in 2014. You can be in the drivers seat of your life if you choose to be, but that’s a decision you need to make. Most people sit back and let the road of life take them wherever it wants to when in reality they actually could have a significant amount of control over their day to day lives.
I share this passage from John as our first for the year because it’s not only a good reminder for our lives but it’s also a statement of hope for 2014. If you’ve been around this blog for a while you know I’m a big believer in the need for our lives to have hope in them. Life is full of challenges so it’s important to have a source of strength and encouragement to support us whatever life brings our way.
God has been with us before and during every step of our lives. He has promised never to leave or forsake us and He has left his book of life, the Bible, with us to guide and encourage us. It’s one reason that having a daily Bible reading practice is so important.
The Bible reveals many things, but in addition to the consistent message of new life in Jesus, the other theme seen throughout the Bible is that God overcomes. No matter what is in your life today God can help you overcome it. What will this year begin for you?
