Quiet Reflection

As I mentioned on Monday our topic for this month is that of being quiet. It’s not easy for us with the long to-do lists we all have and all that goes on in the world around us. Today I want to talk a bit about the why of our topic. Have you ever taken the time to stop and listen lately? We live in a really noisy world, whether you live in the city or the country there are noises all around us. Part of taking time to be quiet is to be more aware of what goes on around us, to hear those noises and open ourselves to hearing what goes on around us. No, some of us don’t want to hear what goes on in our corner of the world, especially if we live in a high-crime area or war zone. But no matter where we live we can learn a lot from what we hear when we take the time to be quiet.

We’ll never get to peace or clarity if we don’t take time to stop and think or just to be. Reflection is a crucial part of our lives that we don’t typically devote hardly any time to, but is one of the most important things we can do. If we don’t take time to reflect we’ll never be able to create the life we want because we haven’t taken the time to evaluate where we’re at and what we really want. If you just push ahead without a plan or goal where do you think you’ll end up? No, that’s not a rhetorical question and no I can’t just give you an answer.  Unless you take the time to stop and consider your present and future you’ll never end up anywhere good or likely anywhere you really want to go.

So as we head into this month I don’t want you to be frustrated that I’m asking you (and me!) to take a time out each day to be quiet, instead I want you to understand where I’m coming from and just how important it is. Until you’re receptive to what could be you’ll never feel fulfilled or live the life you really want deep down inside, instead your world will just get smaller and more limited. So if you’re frustrated with where your life is, consider how much quiet time you’ve taken lately. I’ll bet that you haven’t taken much time for reflection, and if so change that today.

“In the attitude of silence the soul finds the path in an clearer light, and what is elusive and deceptive resolves itself into crystal clearness. Our life is a long and arduous quest after Truth.” Mahatma Gandhi
