Enjoying life is just as much about the future as it is about the present. Yes, you want to prepare for the future but a huge part of enjoying life is about enjoying each day, each moment, each experience as it happens. On the family and business blog this week I shared about how important it is to have a good attitude about life even if you are getting a lot more lemons than lemon bars. Not every day will turn out great. You won’t go to bed every night with a huge sense of satisfaction. You won’t feel like the king/queen of the world every day. But you can choose to have at least one good thing in each and every day.
One of the smartest ways to make sure every day has something great in it is to set yourself up for that pleasure. Schedule in that bubble bath, make a treat you can enjoy a little of each night after work or the kids go to bed, get a treat for yourself not just the kids at the store, DVR that TV show and once a week don’t do any housework or exercise during it, mentor someone, go to bed early, hire a sitter for a few hours, take a skill development or hobby class, leave the dishes to clean until the next day, or whatever little thing will give you a smile even if it’s just for a short time.
Why? Because not only does it make you feel good, it also keeps your spirits up. Going through life depressed, downtrodden or just trying to make it through isn’t the way to live. It doesn’t make your kids want to live, doesn’t give them any motivation for their lives and futures, doesn’t contribute in a positive way to society, and doesn’t make the world a better place (because I don’t know too many unhappy places that are places I want to visit). So this week take the time to schedule the rest of the month with little pleasures that will make you smile. And if you want a bonus pleasure each day, do the same for your partner and your kids, too.
